Iván López, Western Oregon University Student, Awarded PLGP Scholarship
Portland Latino Gay Pride (PLGP) has selected Iván A. López García to receive a one-thousand dollar college scholarship. Established in 2012, by the Portland Latino Gay Pride Board of Directors, the PLGP Scholarship is a partnership with Equity Foundation. This is the first scholarship at Equity Foundation to focus on the Latino/a LGTBTQ community and the first of it’s kind in Oregon.
Iván is a Junior at Western Oregon University, majoring in Visual Communications Design with a minor in Spanish. He is currently on the Honor Role, a WOU Diversity Scholar, and past Cesar E. Chavez Leadership Conference scholarship recipient. He will be the first member of his family to graduate from college. Iván was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, graduated from Woodburn High School, and takes pride in his culture and background.
The PLGP Scholarship is awarded based on:
- Academic Achievement
- Activities or Volunteer Work Experience
- Awards or Honors
- Past service to and involvement in the Latino/a GLBT communitY

Portland Latino Gay Pride Scholarship, established in 2012 by the Board of Directors of PLGP, offers scholarships to students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT), or are the children of LGBT parents, who reside in Oregon or Clark County Washington, and need financial assistance to attain their post-secondary educational goals with preference placed on Latino/a candidates. The deadline for the 2013-2014 school year is July 1, 2013.

Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce (HMCC) Scholarship Program
Nicholas Diaz-Hui, Wilson High School Senior, Awarded PLGP/HMCC Scholarship
Nick Diaz-Hui was presented with the PLGP/HMCC Scholarship at Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber May 1st Luncheon. Nick plans to study at Oregon State University to continue his academic achievements and pursue his interests in Psychiatry, Music, and Theatre. Nick was been recognized for his outstanding writing, his poem Que Hay Un Fuego, was published in a district-wide collection of student works and the title of the collection features the name of the poem. He was awarded the Academic letter/pin for scholastic achievement, Awarded the Academic letter/pin for at least 250 hours commitment to Wilson High School Theatre Department for the past 3 years, member of National Honor Society, and 2011 officer for Wilson High School Latino Student Union.
Since 1996, HMCC has awarded $1,222,850, in individually and corporate sponsored scholarships to 497 Latino Students throughout Oregon and SW Washington. In 2010, PLGP first participated in the HMCC Scholarship Program, sponsoring a $1000.00 scholarship award. The partnership continues, last year PLGP sponsored another $1000.00 Scholarship Award and in 2012, PLGP sponsored a $500.00 Scholarship Award.
