Mariposa Award

May 19th, 2008 Uncategorized davidm

In 2006, the theme for Portland Latino Gay Pride’s first celebration was Noche de Familia y Mariposas/Night of Family and Butterflies.219b50ee37035ecc1 “Mariposa” is a slang term used in many Latin American countries to describe someone who is gay. For many, it was used in a disrespectful or derogatory manner.

Portland Latino Gay Pride decided to change that by celebrating  ”who we are” and taking PRIDE in the “mariposa” inside of all of us.

At our 2008 Portland Latino Gay Pride Celebration the Annual Mariposa Awards were established. We believe it’s important to honor individuals and organizations who are making a difference in our community.chicawhobrunch-10-of-1741

Seeking nominations from the community, a selection process begins in April with the recipients announced during our celebration. Previous awardees are true champions for our community.  They are

  • well respected businesses and organizations
  • they celebrate the artistic talents of our people
  • dedicated to empowering future generations
  • represent the tenacity to educate and advocate for others
  • are committed to helping others.

We are fortunate they are in our community.
