A planning committee formed in January 2006 to organize the first Portland Latino Gay Pride Celebration - Noche de Familia y Mariposas.
Made up of community volunteers, the planning committee partnered with El Hispanic Newspaper and Jupiter Hotel to organize an evening mid-week event. The goal, to recognize the talents and contributions of Gay Latinos and Latinas.
A proclamation by Portland Mayor Tom Potter, and Multnomah County Commissioner Maria Rojo de Steffey formally established a new community tradition.
The following year, listening to the community the celebration moved to a Sunday evening and “Noche de Fuego” was born.
The program included noted community leaders, local entertainers including Portland Gay Men’s Chorus, Lo Nuestro Ballet Floklorico, and the infamous Meesha Peru.
With two successful celebrations and continued community support, Portland Latino Gay Pride decided to expand to four days of activities and events. They say third time is the charm and in 2008,“Papis y Chicas” did not disappoint.
The four day celebration included a partnership with Miracle Theatre and the production of Gaytino! New traditions were established such as Chicas who Brunch, Papis Dance Party, and the Mariposa Awards.
As we entered our fourth year, we continued to listen to the community. Our commitment to celebrating and educating was firmly in place and for 2009 we searched for a theme that would unite our communities. “La Lucha” was the answer.
Our common struggles brings us together and who can resist “lucha libre” or mexican wrestling? Voz Alta, a celebration of music, poetry and acting kicked things off. Our closing festival featured live wrestling, with local wresters Mega Boy and El Gato!
Scheduled annually, during the first week of June, Portland Latino Gay Pride is now the official kick off to Pride Month in Oregon. Mark your calendars for La Lucha 2010, June 2nd - June 6th, crowd favorites will be back and new traditions will be established
. Que Viva La Lucha y Que Viva Portland Latino gay Pride.
We continue to coordinate efforts with Pride Northwest Inc www.pridenw.org. But most of all Portland Latino Gay Pride remains committed to providing an opportunity to Educate, Celebrate and bring our gente/people together!
