Mariposa Awards

Portland Latino Gay Pride Seeks Nominations: 2011 Mariposa Award

In 2008 Portland Latino Gay Pride established the Annual Mariposa Awards. “Mariposa” is a slang term used in many Latin American countries to describe someone who is gay. For many, it was used in a disrespectful or derogatory manner. Portland Latino Gay Pride decided to change this by celebrating “who we are” and taking pride in the “mariposa” inside all of us.

The Mariposa Award is an opportunity to recognize outstanding individuals and organizations making a difference in our community.

To nominate someone, please email a brief paragraph to laluchachair@yahoo.com explaining why your nominee should receive a Mariposa Award.

Selection criteria:

  • History of community involvement and volunteerism
  • Advocacy and support of the Latino and/or LGBTQ community
  • Commitment to arts and culture as a means to educate and inspire
  • Demonstrated leadership and dedication to social justice

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, July 1.

Recipients will be recognized at this year’s Portland Latino Gay Pride Festival, Sunday, July 17th, Noon-9pm, East bank Esplanade, Portland OR. For more information about the award, a list of previous recipients, and to learn about this years’ scheduled events and activities, visit our website www.latinogaypridepdx.com.
